Jimmy Carter at ‘very end’ of his ‘journey’ as he turns 100

Jimmy Carter reached an extraordinary milestone on October 1, celebrating his 100th birthday as the first U.S. president to live a full century. However, his grandson has shared that Carter’s activities are now very limited as he faces the final chapter of his life.

Family and friends gathered in Plains, Georgia, Carter’s hometown, to commemorate his centennial birthday. This marked the first birthday without his beloved wife, Rosalynn, who passed away in November 2023. In a touching message, President Joe Biden acknowledged this bittersweet occasion, remarking, “She’s in your heart; she’ll never go away.”

The milestone celebration took place at Carter’s Plains home, where he now resides in hospice care. Jason, Carter’s grandson, noted that this home is more than just a house; it’s a place that has provided him with comfort and peace. Jason reflected on his grandfather’s current phase of life, describing it as a meaningful time, even as he continues to cope with Rosalynn’s absence.

Carter’s family members and close friends marked the day with cupcakes and a special flyover of World War II planes in his honor. Carter’s son, Chip, shared that the former president remains engaged and is determined to live long enough to vote in the next election.

Jason, who chairs the Carter Center, praised his grandfather’s legacy, remarking on how Carter used his century of life to impact countless people positively. Despite being physically limited, Carter continues to find meaning in this chapter of his journey, surrounded by the love and support of those closest to him.
