Former College Track Star Shelby Daniele Dies at 23, Months After Earning Master’s: Details

Shelby Daniele, a former standout at Cal Poly and Buchanan High, passed away unexpectedly at the young age of 23, just months after earning her master’s degree in agriculture. The sudden news of her death has sent shockwaves through her family, friends, and the athletic communities at both her college and high school in Fresno, California. Shelby was celebrated not only for her impressive record-breaking performances in track and field but also for her academic achievements and kind spirit. Following her passing, many in her hometown and beyond have shared their heartfelt tributes.

On September 26, 2024, the Cal Poly Track and Field team announced Shelby’s death via an Instagram post, expressing their sorrow and honoring her significant contributions to the team. The post highlighted her five years as an athlete at the university, her outstanding educational accomplishments, and her role as a team captain. The statement emphasized that “Shelby was truly one of a kind and will be missed dearly by everyone in the Cal Poly community.”

In a similar vein, Buchanan High School, where Shelby first gained prominence as a track star, expressed its grief on Facebook. The school reminisced about her remarkable performance at the 2019 California State Meet, where she won the 200-meter title and helped secure a team championship. They remembered her not just for her athletic prowess but also for her warm and generous nature, noting that she continued to support the program long after her graduation. Her high school track coach, Brian Weaver, described her as “everything you want a young athlete to be.” He fondly recalled how Shelby consistently led her team to championships while showing remarkable improvement as both an athlete and an individual.

Weaver recounted a memory from the 2019 state championships when Shelby, feeling tired and sore after a long weekend of races, pushed through the pain to secure a win, thanks to his encouragement. “It was a great athlete-coaching experience for me because we had to get through some things together,” he said, reflecting on their shared journey. “That is a memory that I will have forever.” He also emphasized that Shelby wasn’t just a star on the track; she was a compassionate and supportive teammate, always there for younger runners. “She mentored so many athletes,” he noted. “She kept them going when times were tough—after graduating, she would take her personal time to come say hi to all the coaches and athletes.”

On September 27, a candlelight vigil was held at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium, where hundreds gathered to honor Shelby’s memory. This was the very place where she had once mesmerized crowds with her extraordinary athletic abilities. Her sister posted an invitation for the community to join in remembrance, stating, “Anyone and all are welcome💛🌻 [sic].” Attendees displayed a collage of photos showcasing Shelby’s joyful moments with loved ones, and her name illuminated the stadium’s scoreboard. A speaker at the vigil shared that she had touched the lives of everyone around her, stating, “She was one in a million.”

Weaver, who had seen Shelby just a week before her untimely death, expressed the profound sense of loss felt by all those who knew her. “She called me and said, ‘It’s me.’ I said, ‘I know who you are.’ She always made time for her old coach,” he recalled, sharing how she unexpectedly stopped him during a run.

In the wake of Shelby’s passing, tributes flooded social media from people who knew her personally and from the community. Brian Brandenburg posted a heartfelt message on Facebook for National Daughters Day, expressing his love and gratitude for his daughters. However, he also shared his deep sadness over Shelby’s passing, noting how she had inspired one of his girls to pursue track at Cal Poly. He described the news as “completely heartbreaking,” mentioning that Shelby had died from a brain aneurysm, although no official cause of death has been confirmed at this time.

The outpouring of support continued across various social media platforms. One Instagram user wrote, “I lived with her in the yakitutu dorms, and she was so sweet and smart. My heart goes out to her friends and family. ❤️ [sic].” Another added, “Absolutely no words. Shelby was a beautiful human and an amazing teammate. Always a gracious competitor. Rest in peace, Shelby.” Meanwhile, her father shared a simple yet devastating comment on Cal Poly’s Instagram post: “I miss you.” These heartfelt sentiments echo what Coach Weaver expressed about Shelby’s character outside of athletics. She was a role model, a leader, and a friend to many.

In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Shelby graduated from Cal Poly in 2023 with a degree in agriculture and went on to earn her master’s in the same field with distinction in 2024. Her passion for environmental stewardship drove her ambitions, and she had plans to pursue a career in agricultural business, hoping to make a meaningful impact on the world.

Shelby is among several athletes, like Chance Gainer, who have passed away unexpectedly in recent months. Our deepest condolences go out to Shelby’s family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to be touched by her remarkable life.
