I Posted a Picture of My Partner and Me on Facebook for the First Time & Immediately Got a Message: ‘You Must Run from Him. Now’

Social media can effortlessly weave itself into our lives and relationships, even when we don’t expect it. For the most part, it’s harmless—cute photos and updates shared with friends and family. But every once in a while, something unexpected happens that you could never foresee.

Mark and I had been dating for nearly a year, and things were going great. He was everything I could have ever wanted in a partner—sweet, funny, caring. Whether we were hiking outdoors or lounging on the couch, he never failed to make me smile. I felt like the luckiest person, so I decided it was time to make our relationship “official” on Facebook.

One afternoon, during a hike, we took a picture together. The sun was shining perfectly behind us, and our smiles mirrored the happiness I felt. I posted the picture, captioned, “Just me and my favorite person on our latest adventure!” with a couple of heart emojis. It was a simple gesture, but I was excited to share a bit of our love with the world.

But just ten minutes later, I received a notification that sent chills down my spine. It wasn’t a like or comment but a message: “YOU MUST RUN FROM HIM. NOW.”

I froze. Who would send me something like that? I clicked on the profile, but it was empty—no information, no photos. Just a blank page. My heart was racing. The message alone was disturbing, but the anonymity made it even more terrifying. I glanced over at Mark, who was busy packing up our gear. Should I tell him?

Before I could decide, another message came through: “Don’t tell Mark anything. Smile and stay calm. You don’t know what he’s capable of. Got it?”

My blood ran cold. What was this? Why was someone sending me these messages? I looked over at Mark again. He waved, smiling at me like everything was normal. But those words had planted a seed of doubt. Was there something I didn’t know about him?

For the next few days, I couldn’t shake the unease. Mark seemed completely unaware of the turmoil brewing inside me, but I started noticing things—little things. I would catch him watching me intently, his gaze lingering a moment too long. It made me uneasy, though I tried to push the thoughts away. After all, Mark had always been loving and kind. But those messages were gnawing at me.

Then, one morning, I received another message from the anonymous account: “Meet me at Bayou Bakery tomorrow at 2 p.m. I’ll give you the evidence. Don’t tell Mark. Make up an excuse.”

Evidence? Of what? I wasn’t sure what to believe anymore, but I knew I had to find out. Over breakfast, I casually mentioned to Mark that I was meeting my mom for lunch the next day. He raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised. “You didn’t mention that before,” he said, but I quickly covered it up with a flimsy excuse about a last-minute plan. He seemed to accept it, but I couldn’t help but feel like he was watching me a little too closely.

The next day, I went to Bayou Bakery as instructed, my nerves on edge. I sat by the window, waiting for someone to approach me with the answers I so desperately needed. But as minutes passed, no one showed up. Just when I was about to leave, the door opened, and there he was—Mark.

“Ellie?” he asked, confusion clouding his face. “What are you doing here? I thought you were meeting your mom.”

My heart stopped. “I… I thought you were at work. What are you doing here?” I stammered.

He sat down, eyes darting around the room. “I got a message. Someone told me to come here. They said I needed to see something about you.”

My mind reeled. He had received messages too? Before we could even begin to process this revelation, another familiar face walked in. Andrew, a mutual friend, strolled over to our table with a smirk.

“Surprise!” Andrew grinned, looking far too pleased with himself.

Mark and I gaped at him in disbelief. “What is going on?” I demanded.

Andrew leaned back, still grinning. “Relax. It was just a prank. More like a test, actually.”

“A test?!” Mark’s voice was cold with fury. “You scared the hell out of us, Andrew. What were you thinking?”

Andrew shrugged, his confidence faltering slightly. “I’ve seen too many relationships fall apart because of lies, rumors, and social media drama. I wanted to see if you two really trusted each other.”

I was livid. “You sent those messages? You made me think Mark was dangerous. You can’t just toy with people like that!”

Andrew raised his hands defensively. “Okay, maybe I went too far. But instead of talking to each other, you both listened to anonymous messages. What does that say about your relationship?”

It hit me hard—Andrew had a point, buried beneath his cruel prank. Mark and I had let doubt creep in because of a few cryptic texts. We hadn’t trusted each other enough to talk about it.

As we left the bakery, Mark and I were both quiet, still processing what had happened. Eventually, I broke the silence. “Do you think Andrew was right?”

Mark sighed. “I hate to admit it, but maybe. We let a few messages get in our heads instead of trusting each other.”

Andrew’s stunt had been cruel, but it taught us a valuable lesson—trust is fragile, and if we let fear and doubt fester, it could unravel everything. From then on, we knew we had to face challenges together, trusting in our relationship no matter what.
