Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Have Bought a European Vacation Home

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have called the United States their home for more than four years, so their latest real estate move is a particularly interesting one. According to a new report, Meghan and Harry recently splashed out for a European vacation home. With a home base across the pond, are we going to see them spending time with the royals again?

Their new home is reportedly located in Portugal.

The Daily Mail‘s royal correspondent, Richard Eden, wrote in his latest column that Harry and Meghan have purchased a home in Portugal. A source confirmed to the news outlet that they had enjoyed a “romantic three night break” there after the Invictus Games last year, and apparently, they liked it so much they decided to put down roots.

They aren’t the first royals to buy property there.

Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, also have a home in Portugal and are two of the few members of the royal family who are still close with the Sussexes. The privacy that’s afforded to Jack and Eugenie when they’re in town may have helped sell Meghan and Harry on the idea, too.

“This is why Portugal is the dream because I can go to the supermarket in my exercise gear and my hair piled on my head and not mind,” Eugenie said during a 2023 episode of the podcast Table Manners.

Meghan and Harry may also be after the ‘Golden Visa.’

The news outlet also pointed out that buying property in Portugal would allow Meghan, a US citizen, to obtain residency, thereby making it easier for her to travel around Europe. This is part of a program called the “Golden Visa,” which allows foreigners to become citizens after investing in a country. Portugal participates in the program, along with Greece, Turkey, and Grenada, among others.

The news comes after Meghan and Harry lost their home in the UK

Though Meghan and Harry once lived in Frogmore Cottage — a property given to them by Queen Elizabeth as a wedding gift — King Charles asked them to leave in 2023. The couple moved out that summer.

“We always saw Archie running around the garden at Frogmore Cottage and maybe jumping in the Queen’s pond,” Harry said in his 2022 Netflix documentary. “That was all part of our future, and everything changed really, really quickly.”

Maybe spending more time in Europe will be good for them.

Portugal is a totally different country, but it’s a lot closer to Buckingham Palace than California — and a flight time of less than three hours to London makes a big difference with two young kids along for the trip.

Maybe this will give Harry and Meghan the opportunity to call a truce with the royals. It has to happen sometime, right?
